Communicating With Colleagues With Hearing Loss
Won’t the interpreter help?” is a question we get asked often. Unfortunately, that question doesn’t often help us. Who are we? We are 48 million Americans with hearing loss, sometimes known as the hard of hearing or late deafened.
Most of us “transitioned” at a certain point or unknown period of our lives into a not-exactly-silent world between hearing and deaf. Once we figure out what happened, we follow different paths to keep up our critical communication sense. But communication is always a two-way street, and we need your help to keep communicating .
Learning Outcomes
- Understand differences between Deaf and hearing-loss communities; learn to give both proper respect
- Learn to apply an array of tools that help people with hearing loss “get” your communication as they need it
- Create inclusive conversations for you and communication partners, no matter their hearing levels
